Democracy Day: Ooni urges FG to intensify fight against insecurity

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged the Federal Government to strengthen its efforts in combating insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality threatening the nation.

The appeal was made in a statement released on Friday in Ile-Ife by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, as part of activities marking Democracy Day.

According to the monarch, the persistent security challenges facing the country continue to hinder peace, progress, and national development. He appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue supporting government initiatives aimed at addressing security and economic concerns.

Oba Ogunwusi stressed that no responsible administration would intentionally permit insecurity to flourish within its borders, emphasizing that the protection of lives and property remains essential for sustainable growth and national stability.

While acknowledging the security issues confronting various regions of the country, the royal father called on governments at all levels to reinforce the nation’s security framework and improve intelligence operations.

He further advocated for better training and equipment for security agencies, as well as the diligent prosecution of individuals involved in criminal activities.

“Democracy can only flourish where peace, security, and justice prevail. As we commemorate Democracy Day, I encourage all levels of government to redouble efforts in tackling insecurity and banditry.

“Safeguarding lives and property must continue to be a foremost responsibility,” he stated.

The Ooni also encouraged Nigerians to remain confident in the nation’s democratic process, noting that meaningful development can only be achieved through collective commitment, patience, and collaboration between leaders and citizens.

“No government desires insecurity within its territory. Although challenges persist, citizens should continue to support legitimate efforts geared towards restoring peace and ensuring safety in our communities.

“By working together, we can overcome these obstacles and create a more secure and prosperous future for our nation,” he added.

The monarch further advised Nigerians to avoid actions and attitudes capable of creating division, urging people across ethnic, religious, and political lines to promote harmony, tolerance, and mutual understanding.

He described national unity as a vital foundation for sustainable development, adding that Nigeria’s diversity should be embraced as a strength rather than a source of conflict.

As part of the Democracy Day celebrations, Oba Ogunwusi offered prayers for peace, stability, and security across the country, seeking divine guidance in the ongoing efforts to eliminate criminal activities and restore lasting peace.

He also prayed for wisdom and direction for leaders at all levels, safety for security operatives, and increased unity, progress, and prosperity for Nigeria.

The traditional ruler reaffirmed his dedication to advancing peace, dialogue, and national unity, expressing confidence that the nation would overcome its present challenges and emerge stronger.

“On this Democracy Day, let us reaffirm our belief in Nigeria, support our security agencies, and join hands in building a peaceful, safe, and prosperous nation,” he said. (NAN)
