South-east PDP demands level playing field for all parties in Ebonyi, Enugu
The Peoples Democratic Party in the south-east has urged the Ebonyi and Enugu state governments to create an enabling political environment for opposition parties ahead of the 2027 election.
In a statement issued on Friday by Ray Nnaji, PDP national vice-chairman for the zone, and Mike Ahumibe, zonal secretary, the party said it was concerned about what it described as the “constant deterioration” of a secure political environment in the region, particularly in Ebonyi and Enugu.
The south-east PDP claimed that opposition party members in the two states had faced violent attacks in recent times, raising doubts over political freedom in the states.
The party also warned chieftains of the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC) against the alleged use of primitive and inflammatory language against opposition parties in Ebonyi.
The party described such actions as unacceptable from any public official who had taken an oath of office to abide by the constitution of the country.
The PDP further alleged that the June 20, 2026, bye-election in Enugu state was marred by widespread thuggery and violence.
It called on Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), police and other security agencies to pay special attention to political activities in the south-east.
It warned that unless security agencies took proactive steps to protect opposition politicians and supporters, the political environment in the region could become increasingly unsafe as the 2027 elections approach.
The party further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral and provide a level playing field for all political parties.
