Human rights advocate and presidential flagbearer of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has vowed to remain active in public protests despite collapsing during a demonstration in Abuja on Friday.
The incident occurred after personnel of the Nigeria Police Force dispersed protesters with tear gas while they were demonstrating against the nation’s deteriorating security conditions and recent violent attacks in parts of the country.
Witnesses said the protest, which began peacefully, turned tense when security operatives intervened to stop participants from moving beyond a designated restricted zone.
Sowore, who was at the forefront of the rally, reportedly inhaled the tear gas, experienced breathing difficulties, and later fell to the ground.
In a post shared on X alongside video clips from the scene, Sowore condemned the incident, describing it as an unjustified action by law enforcement officers.
He claimed that security agents released an unfamiliar substance at close range, which had a serious impact on his breathing.
According to Sowore, the events in the Federal Capital Territory reflect what he described as increasingly aggressive measures aimed at discouraging public criticism and intimidating citizens exercising their constitutional freedoms. He further alleged that the actions were carried out under directives linked to the administration of Bola Tinubu, arguing that the use of force is designed to stifle opposition voices.
