Abducted pupils, teachers yet to leave old Oyo national park corridor – Makinde

By Adeola Badru

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has revealed that the pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities of Oriire Local Government Area are still believed to be within the broader Old Oyo National Park region, as security agencies continue efforts to secure their freedom 27 days after the abduction.

Makinde disclosed this in Newsletter No. 140, released on Friday, assuring residents that the victims remain a top priority in ongoing rescue operations despite the length of their captivity.

The governor acknowledged the fear and emotional burden being experienced by affected families and communities, describing the situation as heartbreaking.

“It is difficult for me to ask how you are doing at this moment. It has been 27 days since our children and teachers were taken from their schools in Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities in Oriire Local Government Area.

“For 27 days, families have spent their nights without their loved ones. For 27 days, communities have lived in uncertainty. For 27 days, our children and teachers have remained in captivity,” Makinde stated.

He admitted that repeated assurances of a safe return may have become difficult for some residents to believe given the prolonged wait.

“I know I have repeatedly assured you that we will bring them home safely. I also understand that hearing those words over and over without seeing results may make them seem empty. But I want you to know they are not. We remain committed to doing everything possible to secure their safe release,” he said.

Makinde explained that while security considerations prevent the disclosure of operational details, the state government and security agencies are actively pursuing every available lead.

“Although we cannot reveal the specifics of our operations, I can assure you that every day we continue to follow credible intelligence and take all lawful steps necessary to secure their freedom,” he added.

Addressing the families of the victims, the governor reassured them that their loved ones have not been forgotten.

“To the parents, relatives, friends and colleagues of those still being held, I understand that no words can truly ease your pain. However, please know that your loved ones remain at the heart of our efforts every single day,” he said.

Providing a significant update on the case, Makinde disclosed that intelligence reports indicate the abducted pupils and teachers are still within the expansive Old Oyo National Park corridor.

“One thing I can confirm is that security reports suggest they remain within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis.

“This vast area stretches across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State and covers approximately 2,500 square kilometres,” he noted.

According to the governor, the size and challenging terrain of the area continue to complicate rescue operations.

“I mention this not to discourage anyone but to help everyone appreciate the magnitude of the challenge. This is not only an Oriire Local Government issue; it concerns the entire state.

“The vast terrain demands patience, coordination and persistence. It also underscores the importance of public vigilance,” he said.

Makinde urged residents to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities through the state’s emergency response platform.

“If you notice anything unusual or suspicious, please contact 615, the Oyo State Citizens Enquiry Number. The line is toll-free and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every report will be treated seriously and acted upon,” he said.

The governor also cautioned against spreading rumours and unverified information, warning that misinformation could hinder rescue efforts.

“We will continue to provide verified updates regarding efforts to secure the release of our children and teachers. However, I urge everyone to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports about these abductions,” he stated.

“Please rely on official sources for information. These are delicate matters, and we must avoid actions that could compromise ongoing operations.”

Makinde further appealed to residents to remain alert, cooperate with security agencies and continue praying for the safe return of the victims.

“Keep praying for their safe return. Remain vigilant and continue supporting our security personnel as they work tirelessly to bring every one of them back home safely,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to residents for their patience, vigilance and support throughout the ongoing rescue efforts.

“Thank you for your patience, your vigilance and your prayers,” the governor concluded.
