The Nigerian Navy has achieved another major success in its ongoing campaign against militancy and criminal activities in the Calabar waterways, handing over a suspected associate of militant groups to the Department of State Services (DSS), Calabar Command.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the suspect, Mr. Ubong Clement, was apprehended by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory stationed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The statement noted that the arrest was part of sustained intelligence-led operations targeted at disrupting criminal networks and their support systems within the region.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect maintained frequent communication with members of militant groups operating around the Dayspring Island corridor and was allegedly involved in activities that undermined ongoing security efforts. Intelligence reports also linked him to a notorious militant figure, Steven Joseph, popularly known as “Juju,” who has been associated with various criminal operations in the waterways.
Further investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly served as an intermediary in the sale of goods stolen from market boats attacked by militants in the area. Authorities said proceeds from the transactions were allegedly transferred to the militant group, providing financial and logistical backing for its activities.
Following the completion of initial investigations, the Navy handed the suspect over to the DSS for further inquiry and possible prosecution in line with existing laws.
The statement emphasized that the transfer demonstrates the Navy’s resolve not only to apprehend individuals directly involved in militancy but also to dismantle the networks that facilitate and sustain such criminal operations.
It added that by targeting local collaborators, security agencies continue to weaken the operational strength of criminal groups active within the maritime environment.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-driven operations, community collaboration, and strategic security measures aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability across the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
