Otti Unveils 20 More Electric Buses To Boost Public Transportation
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has inaugurated another 20 electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle Service, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to providing safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly public transportation across the state.
Speaking during the inauguration at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal in Umuahia on Thursday, Governor Otti said the new buses would expand transport services within and outside Abia State. He noted that the deployment fulfilled his administration’s promise to increase the fleet after the first batch of 20 electric buses was launched in December 2025.
The governor said the additional buses feature larger cargo compartments and facilities to improve accessibility for persons living with disabilities. He added that the investment aligns with the state’s policy of promoting cost-effective and sustainable transportation while encouraging greater private sector participation.
Governor Otti said the state’s transport system has recorded significant improvements in recent months through investments in modern infrastructure, including the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, technology-driven ticketing and more reliable shuttle services.
He warned motorists against violating traffic regulations, including driving against traffic, beating traffic lights, overloading and illegal parking, stressing that offenders would henceforth face stiffer sanctions.
The governor directed the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA) and the Harmonised Taskforce to extend enforcement operations to 10 p.m. daily, including weekends, while deploying additional personnel to major roads. He also announced plans to establish an independent monitoring team to ensure compliance.
Governor Otti further charged officials managing the state’s transport assets to prioritise the maintenance of buses, terminals and bus shelters, while ensuring the welfare of staff. He also ordered thorough investigation and prosecution of cases involving vandalism and sabotage of transport infrastructure.
In his address, the Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, said the additional buses would expand both intra-city and inter-city routes, improve access to safe and affordable transportation, and enhance service delivery. He added that measures had been put in place to ensure the efficient utilisation and maintenance of the new fleet.
