PORT HARCOURT — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has restated that democracy remains the most appropriate system of governance for Nigeria, considering the nation’s wide ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity.
In a goodwill message to Nigerians marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Governor Fubara said June 12 goes beyond being a historic date, describing it as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s long-standing struggle, sacrifice, and shared desire for freedom, justice, and representative leadership.
The governor extended warm greetings to Nigerians both within the country and in the diaspora, while honouring the heroes and heroines of the democratic struggle. He particularly recognised Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, and other patriots whose sacrifices paved the way for the democratic freedoms enjoyed today.
“June 12 reminds us of the sacrifices made for the democracy we have today. The efforts of Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola and many other national heroes laid the foundation for our present democratic experience. Their belief that power ultimately belongs to the people continues to inspire every generation of Nigerians,” he said.
Fubara observed that 33 years after the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, Nigeria’s democratic system has continued to grow and adapt despite several challenges along the way.
“Our democratic journey has faced difficulties, but the strength of our institutions and the resilience of our people have ensured continued progress. The freedom to express opinions, engage in constructive dialogue, and elect leaders through credible elections remains one of our nation’s greatest achievements,” he noted.
The governor emphasized that democracy remains the strongest framework for managing Nigeria’s diversity and turning it into a national advantage.
“Nigeria’s diversity should not be seen as a weakness. When properly managed, it becomes a major strength. Democracy gives us the platform to build consensus, encourage inclusion, strengthen unity, and promote sustainable development and shared prosperity,” he said.
Fubara also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as ongoing efforts to improve the economy, enhance security, and strengthen democratic institutions nationwide.
He reaffirmed Rivers State’s readiness to continue working with the Federal Government in implementing policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare through infrastructure development, job creation, better security, quality education, healthcare services, and good governance.
The governor further called on Nigerians, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences, to use Democracy Day as an opportunity to renew their commitment to nation-building and democratic ideals.
“Democracy should not only be seen as an election process. It must reflect in our daily lives through accountability, transparency, tolerance, justice, respect for the rule of law, and responsible leadership. We all share the duty of strengthening our democracy for future generations,” he said.
Expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, Fubara urged citizens to remain united, hopeful, and committed to peace, dialogue, and national development.
“Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous Nigeria where every citizen has the chance to succeed and contribute meaningfully to national progress,” he added.
