The Nigerian Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has reacted to the statement made by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that he may not be alive to contest the 2027 general elections.
Featuring in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ on Friday, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, said the statement is deeply worrisome and should be taken seriously.
Ojukwu said the issue of whether the opposition has enough space to play its role is a legitimate concern.
Recall that Obi had alleged that his life is under threat, claiming he is being deliberately frustrated and targeted by the government.
Reacting, the Rights Commission’s boss said, “The statement made by Peter Obi is deeply worrisome and should be taken seriously.
When I listened to the statement this morning, I immediately called my team and asked, what should our response be?
“The issue of whether the opposition has enough space to play its role is a legitimate concern.
“Beyond that, there are broader concerns about freedom of expression, access to information, and the shrinking civic space, especially as the elections draw closer.
