ABUJA — The Senate has approved a total of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years.
The approved budgets comprise N170,103,487,540.56 for 2025 and N233,963,594,010.18 for 2026
The approval followed the presentation of the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central), on behalf of the Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori (Jigawa East).
According to the committee, the funds are intended to support the statutory mandate of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, including the procurement of operational vehicles and equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and stations, training and retraining of personnel, and other interventions aimed at strengthening policing across the country.
For the 2026 budget, the Senate approved N43.78 billion for capital expenditure, while allocations to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the NPTF Headquarters amount to N179.11 billion, bringing total capital expenditure to N222.89 billion.
The recurrent expenditure for 2026 includes N1.86 billion for personnel costs and N9.21 billion for overheads, bringing the total recurrent expenditure to N11.07 billion.
Funding for the 2026 budget is expected to come from statutory allocations, including 0.5 per cent of revenue accruing to the Federation Account, 0.5 per cent of Value Added Tax (VAT), 0.05 per cent of the net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, as well as grants, donations and other sources.
For the 2025 fiscal year, the approved budget includes N159.74 billion for capital expenditure, comprising N27.29 billion for the NPTF Headquarters and N132.45 billion for the Nigeria Police Force.
Recurrent expenditure for 2025 consists of N1.82 billion for personnel costs and N8.54 billion for overheads, bringing the total recurrent allocation to N10.36 billion.
The committee said funding for the 2025 budget would also be drawn from statutory allocations, VAT receipts, contributions from the net profits of companies, grants and donations.
Presenting the report, Senator Akintunde said the committee recommended that priority be given to projects and programmes that enhance operational capacity, personnel welfare, training and infrastructure within the Nigeria Police Force.
The committee also urged the Police Trust Fund to strengthen its monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure value for money and the timely execution of projects.
It further called for the prompt implementation of the approved budgets to support policing and improve the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force in carrying out its statutory responsibilities across the country.
