Afrobeat’s international success has often been linked to major UK cities such as London, Birmingham, and Manchester. However, a significant cultural transformation has gradually been unfolding in North Wales, where Nigerian-born musician Emmanuel Eze-Ogwa, popularly known as Don Gz, has been helping to increase the genre’s presence and influence within the region.
Beyond his role as a recording and performing artist, Don Gz has become an active participant in a broader cultural movement aimed at introducing Afrobeat to new audiences. Through his involvement in student communities, multicultural celebrations, and grassroots entertainment events across Bangor and neighbouring areas, he has played a part in expanding the reach of African music in places where it previously had limited visibility.
Since making Wales his home, Don Gz has consistently promoted Afrobeat through live performances, community engagement initiatives, and cultural programmes. His participation in university-based events and local entertainment platforms has helped foster a growing appreciation for African music within North Wales, an area not traditionally recognised as a hub for Afrobeat culture.
Much of this growth has been driven by continuous grassroots efforts, including student gatherings, private events, cultural exhibitions, and partnerships with African student organisations. These activities have provided opportunities for many people to experience Afrobeat for the first time and engage with the culture behind the music.
Reflecting on his experiences, Don Gz highlighted the unifying power of music:
“Music is one of the strongest tools for bringing people together. In North Wales, I have witnessed how Afrobeat can create connections between diverse communities, even in places where the genre was not originally part of the cultural landscape. It has been a gradual process of building relationships and creating opportunities for cultural exchange.”
His influence within the UK music scene has continued to grow through performances in several cities, including Bangor, Cardiff, Liverpool, Chester, and Birmingham. Among the notable moments in his career are sharing the stage with internationally acclaimed singer Seyi Shay during Afro Rave Bangor, supporting BNXN at a Birmingham event in 2024, and performing alongside DJames at Afroplug Festival Cardiff 2025, held at Vale Arena. He is also expected to make a return appearance at Afroplug Festival in 2026.
In addition to his musical performances, Don Gz has received recognition from cultural organisations for his contributions to diversity and community engagement. Black History Wales honoured him with a Significant Contributor Award in recognition of his efforts to promote cultural inclusion through music. He has also earned nominations in the Welsh MOBO Awards for Best New Artist and Best Afrobeat Act.
As Afrobeat continues to gain momentum across the world, its growing presence in regions such as North Wales highlights the increasing influence of African music throughout the United Kingdom. Artists like Don Gz are contributing not only through their performances but also by helping to establish and nurture Afrobeat culture in emerging communities.
For Don Gz, the mission extends beyond personal achievements. His focus remains on fostering cultural growth, expanding Afrobeat’s reach, and ensuring that the genre continues to thrive in new environments while connecting people from different backgrounds through music.
