A wave of sorrow swept through Ta-Hoss community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday night after two local vigilantes were allegedly killed while carrying out security duties in the area.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 10 p.m., plunging the community into mourning.
The victims, identified as 48-year-old Davou Dalyop Patu and 38-year-old Dalyop Zaram, were said to be dedicated members of the local vigilante team responsible for helping maintain peace and security in the community.
According to sources, the two men were on a routine patrol when they were attacked by suspected assailants whose identities have not yet been established.
Their deaths have further heightened concerns over the security situation in Riyom LGA, with residents expressing anxiety about the recurring attacks and insecurity affecting rural communities.
Confirming the incident, community leader Livinus Badung described the slain vigilantes as hardworking and selfless individuals who devoted themselves to protecting the lives and property of residents.
He said the loss has deeply affected the community, noting that many residents are still struggling to accept the deaths of the two men who had played key roles in local security efforts.
Badung added that both victims were admired for their bravery and steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of their community.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident and expressed grief over the killings. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Ta-Hoss community.
Tengwong condemned the continued attacks on vulnerable communities and called on security agencies to strengthen measures aimed at protecting lives and property. He also urged relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
