The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday launched a nationwide mobilisation campaign targeting youths and women, expressing confidence that the initiative could help the party secure a voter support base of at least 10 million ahead of future elections.
The programme forms part of the PDP’s broader strategy to rebuild its grassroots structures, encourage greater youth participation in politics, and expand its electoral influence across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration of the PDP National Youth Leadership Consultative Forum for the Survival of Democracy in Nigeria and the PDP Female Youth Wing in Abuja, the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, urged young women to take active roles in politics and disregard reports suggesting divisions within the party.
He stressed that the gathering was designed to achieve tangible outcomes rather than serve as a social event.
According to Anyanwu, the PDP remains committed to empowering and mentoring young women, creating pathways for them to contest and occupy positions such as councillors, local government chairpersons, lawmakers, and other public offices.
He encouraged the participants to recognise their potential, noting that women are equally capable of excelling in leadership and governance.
The PDP National Secretary also disclosed plans to establish an organised female youth mobilisation network nationwide, with the goal of engaging at least 5,000 young women in every state within the next three months.
He explained that the strategy would focus on grassroots engagement across local government areas, building a strong support base through coordinated mobilisation efforts.
Anyanwu further urged young women to take advantage of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp, to promote political awareness, engagement, and mobilisation.
Addressing concerns over alleged internal rifts within the opposition party, he maintained that the PDP remained united and fully functional under its recognised leadership, with active youth and women structures operating across the country.
Earlier, in a statement issued by the PDP National Youth Leader, Ambassador Ibrahim Bala-Aboki, the party described the newly inaugurated youth and women bodies as key components of its wider mobilisation framework.
Bala-Aboki expressed optimism that the structures, backed by clearly defined responsibilities and coordinated grassroots activities, would significantly strengthen the party’s support base and potentially deliver no fewer than 10 million votes nationwide in future elections.
