Senate’s passage of state police bill historic, says Sanwo-Olu

LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on the Senate’s approval of the constitutional amendment bill aimed at establishing state police across Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor described the Senate’s passage of the 26-clause bill as a major milestone in the country’s democratic growth and security reforms.

Sanwo-Olu said the development marked one of the most far-reaching changes to Nigeria’s security framework, noting that state policing would enhance community-based law enforcement and improve public safety nationwide.

He characterized the Senate’s endorsement as a historic achievement, adding that it reflects President Tinubu’s enduring commitment to advancing true federalism and progressive governance.

“Today is a significant moment for Nigeria and a victory for democratic ideals and developmental policies over narrow interests,” the governor stated.

According to Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu has consistently advocated for the creation of state police since his tenure as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007, despite opposition from various stakeholders.

“State police has remained a priority for President Tinubu since his days as governor of Lagos. We are delighted to see this vision becoming a reality,” he said.

The governor expressed confidence that the proposed policing structure would strengthen the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats that have hindered national progress.

He commended the president’s foresight, determination, and commitment to reforms designed to deepen federalism and improve governance across the country.

Sanwo-Olu also praised the Senate for taking what he described as a bold and historic step and called on state legislatures to promptly consider and approve the amendment.

“The Senate has written its name in history with this courageous decision. I urge all state Houses of Assembly to expedite action on the bill so that this crucial constitutional reform can be fully realized,” he said.
