South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has urged Africans to remain united after responding to controversy over comments that were recently attributed to him.
The goalkeeper said he had come under criticism for remarks he insists he never made, particularly claims suggesting he spoke about Africans supporting Mexico.
“I’ve been targeted over the last few days for things I never said. I did not make any comments about Africa or Africans supporting Mexico,” Williams clarified.
He reaffirmed his long-standing belief in solidarity among African nations, stressing that countries across the continent should continue supporting one another through both successes and challenges.
“I’ve always maintained that, as Africans, we are one. We stand by each other in good times and bad. Every country has its own issues to deal with back home, but unity remains important,” he said.
Williams also highlighted the diverse and inclusive atmosphere surrounding the tournament, emphasizing that football should bring people together rather than create divisions.
“Being here in Atlanta, I see Africans and Mexicans sharing the same spaces, and that’s the beauty of football. Let’s enjoy the game, have a great time, and leave politics to the politicians. Football should be about what happens on the pitch, and that’s what we should focus on,” he added.
