The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has praised Governor Umo Eno for settling outstanding salary arrears owed to local government workers across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the state NULGE President, Comrade Anestina Iweh, the union described the payment as a strong indication of the governor’s dedication to improving workers’ welfare.
According to the union, the settlement of the long-overdue arrears has brought significant relief to thousands of local government employees and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to addressing workers’ concerns.
“The payment of the outstanding arrears owed to local government workers clearly demonstrates Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of employees in Akwa Ibom State,” the statement noted.
NULGE also commended key stakeholders who contributed to the successful payment process, including the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong; the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Akwa Ibom and Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Uwemedimo Udo; as well as the chairmen of the state’s 31 local government councils.
The union stated that the coordinated efforts of the state government and local government authorities played a crucial role in settling the inherited liabilities left unresolved by previous administrations.
“NULGE deeply appreciates the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the ALGON Chairman, and all 31 local government chairmen for their collective commitment to ensuring the payment of these outstanding obligations,” the statement added.
The union further observed that the intervention has boosted workers’ morale, restored trust in government, and renewed confidence among employees who had patiently awaited the payment of the arrears.
It noted that the settlement reflects the government’s awareness of the economic challenges faced by workers and its determination to enhance their welfare and productivity.
NULGE said the successful clearance of the arrears has strengthened confidence in Governor Eno’s leadership and in the efforts of all stakeholders who facilitated the process.
The union also reaffirmed its support for the administration’s ARISE Agenda, pledging the continued loyalty, dedication, and commitment of local government workers toward efficient grassroots service delivery.
Describing the payment as another major milestone, NULGE said the development would further strengthen the local government system and improve public service delivery throughout Akwa Ibom State.
The union added that the gesture has reinforced workers’ confidence in the current administration, emphasizing the vital role local government employees play in the effective delivery of public services across the state.
