‘It Hurts Not to Be at the 2026 World Cup,’ Says Osimhen

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has opened up for the first time about Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the setback as a painful experience for both himself and his teammates.

The 2026 World Cup, expanded to 48 participating nations, officially kicked off last week. Despite Africa receiving nine automatic qualification slots and an additional playoff position, Nigeria failed to make the tournament. The Super Eagles fell short after finishing second in their qualifying group and were later eliminated by DR Congo in the playoff stage.

The outcome means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive edition, a disappointing development for one of Africa’s most successful football nations.

Speaking during a recent livestream on social media, Osimhen admitted that the disappointment remains difficult to accept.

“It’s painful, not only for me but for all the players,” the Napoli forward said. “Missing out on the World Cup twice in a row is tough. But sometimes things don’t go as planned in life, and we have to keep pushing forward.”

Nigeria’s last appearance at the FIFA World Cup came in 2018, leaving several members of the current squad, including Osimhen, yet to experience football’s biggest tournament.
