Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have successfully rescued seven farmers who were abducted during a bandit attack and recovered several stolen motorcycles in Gandi, Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The rescue mission was conducted on Tuesday by personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division stationed in Gandi following reports that armed bandits had attacked farmers working in the area.

A security source revealed that the troops responded swiftly to the distress call, launching a coordinated operation that led to the rescue of the kidnapped victims and the recovery of motorcycles taken by the attackers during the incident.

According to the source, the bandits invaded farmlands around Gandi in the early hours of Tuesday, targeting farmers for abduction while also stealing personal belongings. However, the prompt intervention of security personnel disrupted the operation, forcing the criminals to retreat and enabling the safe release of the victims.

One civilian reportedly sustained a gunshot wound during the encounter and was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Gandi, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, noted that the rapid deployment of troops prevented further casualties and additional property losses.

He emphasized that the operation demonstrates the growing effectiveness of ongoing military offensives against criminal elements operating across parts of the North-West. He added that security forces remain committed to ensuring that farmers can carry out their activities in a secure environment without fear of intimidation or attacks.

The source further stressed the importance of timely intelligence and swift operational responses in tackling security challenges in rural communities. He noted that security agencies have intensified proactive measures aimed at protecting farming settlements, particularly during the peak farming season.

Residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information with security agencies to strengthen ongoing efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.

The successful operation is regarded as another significant boost to security efforts in Sokoto State, underscoring the determination of the military and other security agencies to protect lives, preserve livelihoods, and maintain pressure on criminal networks threatening peace and stability in the region.
