By Demola Akinyemi, Ilorin

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the death of four people, while two others sustained injuries following a suspected cult clash in the Post Office area of Ilorin on Sunday night. Two suspects have also been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, made this known in a statement released on Monday.

According to the police, the attack occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2026, when a group of armed assailants invaded a makeshift drinking spot located near the railway line and opened fire on people gathered there before escaping.

Police officers who responded to a distress call quickly arrived at the scene and transported the victims to the Police Clinic for emergency treatment.

The statement noted that four of the victims were pronounced dead by medical personnel, while two others are receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Initial findings by investigators suggest that the incident was linked to cult activities. The police confirmed the arrest of two suspected members of a notorious cult group believed to have played a role in the attack.

According to the command, the suspects remain in custody and are cooperating with investigators by providing information that could lead to the arrest of other members of the criminal gang.

The police added that tactical and intelligence units have been mobilised to track down everyone connected to the incident and ensure they face justice.

Describing the attack as a major threat to public safety, the command assured residents that proactive security measures are being intensified to prevent similar incidents.

Residents were also encouraged to remain calm and support ongoing investigations by providing useful and credible information to security agencies.
