Makinde Reaffirms Commitment to Youth Empowerment at NYSC Orientation in Oyo

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment that allows young people to thrive and make meaningful contributions to society.

The governor made the statement on Monday at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Iseyin. He was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaja Wasilat Adegoke.

Addressing the corps members, Makinde encouraged them to integrate with their host communities by learning, appreciating, and respecting local cultures and traditions. He emphasized that his administration would continue to support programmes that promote youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, and innovation.

According to the governor, young people possess the capacity to transform society when provided with the right opportunities, guidance, and support.

He urged the corps members to approach their service year with discipline, dedication, and an open mind, stressing that the period should be seen as more than a compulsory national assignment.

“Use this opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, build meaningful relationships, respect the communities where you serve, and make positive contributions wherever you find yourselves,” he said.

Makinde further described the NYSC scheme as a training ground for leadership and nation-building, noting that the younger generation has a crucial role to play in promoting peace, unity, and national development.

He also commended the management and officials of the NYSC for their sustained efforts in advancing the objectives of the scheme over the years.

In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Peters, charged the corps members to carry out their responsibilities with commitment, selflessness, and a strong sense of duty.

He encouraged them to participate actively in all camp activities, obey instructions, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the orientation programme.

Peters noted that the orientation course serves as the foundation for a successful service year and provides participants with valuable experiences that can shape their future and strengthen their commitment to national development.

The event also featured the administration of the Oath of Allegiance to 3,938 corps members by the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Iyabo Yerima, who was represented by Justice Muniru Olagunju.
