Renowned Nollywood actor, playwright, filmmaker and academic, Dr Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
The news of his death was made public on Friday by fellow actor Kunle Afod through a post on Instagram.
“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His extraordinary talent, unforgettable performances, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s theatre and film industry will always be remembered. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, sir. Your impact lives on,” Afod wrote.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Oyewo began his journey in acting in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group and later became one of the most celebrated personalities in Yoruba theatre and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
He rose to prominence for his acclaimed role as Odewale in The Gods Are Not to Blame.
During a career that lasted more than 60 years, Oyewo appeared in several notable productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Super Story, and numerous Yoruba-language films that played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s film industry.
Beyond his achievements on screen and stage, Oyewo also enjoyed a successful academic career. He obtained a PhD in Drama from the University of Ibadan and served as a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University.
