Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, has guaranteed the citizens of
Nigeria that President Bola Tinubu will not engage in any international deal
that could harm the country's interests.
The minister acknowledged in a press release on Thursday that Nigeria has recently
ratified the Samoa Agreement at the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific
States Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium.
The minister emphasized that the partnership agreement is between
the EU and its member states, on one hand, and the members of the OACPS on the other.
Daily Trust has stated that the reported agreement contains certain provisions
that require underdeveloped and developing nations to endorse the demands of the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community for recognition, as a prerequisite for
receiving financial and other assistance from more advanced countries.
The agreement, named after the Pacific Island Samoa where it was signed, is slowly gaining momentum, despite facing resistance from numerous countries that hold dear their Islamic and Christian values
as well as the sensitivity of their cultures.
In response to the report, the Minister of Information emphasized that Nigeria's approval was supported by a declaration issued on 26th June 2024, outlining the country's interpretation and application of the agreement within its legal framework.
The Minister highlighted that any clause conflicting with Nigerian laws would be deemed null and void.
Furthermore, the Minister pointed out the legislation prohibiting same-sex relationships in Nigeria,
which was enacted in 2014.
It is imperative to guarantee Nigerians that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu,
the Administration, which operates on the basis of rules,
will not engage in any international agreements that could harm the country and its people.
