The civil defense agency in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, reported on
Sunday that 15 individuals lost their lives in an attack
on a school that was providing shelter to those displaced by the war,
despite the Israeli military's claim that they were targeting "terrorists"..
The strike on the UN-operated Abu Araban facility in the Nuseirat camp in
central Gaza marked the fifth attack on a school-turned-shelter within a span of eight days.
According to Mahmud Bassal, the spokesperson for the civil defense agency,
the Abu Araban school was accommodating "thousands of displaced individuals,"
with a majority of the casualties being women and children..
Two previous school strikes in Nuseirat targeted schools,
as Israel continues its offensive against Hamas Palestinian militants
who initiated the conflict with an attack on Israel on October 7.
The Israeli military stated that its air force targeted "several terrorists who were
present in the vicinity of UNRWA's Abu Araban school building in Nuseirat,"
that the building was being used as a hideout and base for attacks on Israeli soldiers.
Footage from AFPTV displayed the three-story building still standing,
with clothes and bedding hanging over the railings. The UN logo on a
wall had been destroyed, and the interior rooms were damaged..
On July 6, Israeli airstrikes hit the Al-Jawni school,
also managed by the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA),
in Nuseirat, where approximately 2,000 individuals were seeking refuge..
The next day, four individuals lost their lives in an attack on the
Holy Family school in Gaza City, located in the northern part of the territory,
as reported by the Civil Defense agency.
Israel targeted another school in Nuseirat on Monday, claiming to be aiming at "terrorists".
The day after, a source from a hospital confirmed that at least 29 individuals
were killed in an attack at the entrance of the Al-Awda school in the Khan Yunis area in southern Gaza.
Israel alleges that Hamas utilizes schools, hospitals,
and other public infrastructure for their operations..
