Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB),
has urged the Nigerian government to focus on production,
emphasizing that importing food will not solve the issue of food insecurity.
Speaking at a retreat hosted by the African Primates of the Council of Anglican Provinces of Africa
(CAPA) in Abuja, Adesina highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency in stabilizing
food prices within the country.
He stated that Nigeria should not depend on importing food to stabilize prices.
Instead, Nigeria should focus on increasing food production to stabilize prices,
as well as to generate employment and decrease foreign exchange expenditures,
which will in turn contribute to stabilizing the naira.
He mentioned that Nigeria cannot solve its food insecurity issues through imports.
Additionally, he expressed his disappointment with
Nigeria's decision to open its borders for large-scale
food imports in response to temporary price increases.
